Dream Adobe / Southwestern Style House Plans & Designs

Southwestern style house plans fit beautifully in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Southern California, Utah, and parts of Colorado. But that doesn’t mean you can’t build one elsewhere – the elegance and emphasis on outdoor living would stand out in many different areas. Please note that some locations may require specific engineering and/or local code adoptions. Be sure to check with your contractor or local building authority to see what is required for your area.

Encompassing influences of American Indian and Spanish Colonial architecture, Southwestern house plans offer a unique mix of traditional and contemporary elements. Set low to the ground with flat or low-pitched tile roofs (often red), one and two story Southwestern home plans beckon visitors inside with arched entryways and the splash of courtyard fountains behind rustic wrought iron gates and ornately carved front doors. Traditional masonry construction covered in stucco keeps the interiors cool. Decorative detailing may include patterned tile work, exposed timbers, and stone floors, giving Southwestern home plans a distinctive flavor and creating a cool, inviting ambiance.

You’ll notice some overlap with the Mediterranean style – that’s because there are many common elements, from stucco exteriors to red tile roofs. Many of the homes in this collection feature elements of Spanish or Mission architecture, including parapet roof details, elegant arches, and exposed brackets.

Naturally, outdoor living takes center stage with Southwestern designs. Courtyards provide private places to relax outside, especially in the cool evening. Lanais and patios give space for outdoor cooking. If you’re building in the desert where it gets cold at night, consider including an outdoor fireplace.

Inside, open layouts create a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Big kitchen islands give you room to prepare Southwestern classic dishes like tamales, chile sauces (both red and green), and enchiladas. Sip a margarita out on the lanai while watching the colorful sunset.

Whether you’re building your dream home in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, Las Vegas or Palm Springs, you’ll find the perfect Southwestern home plan here.
