Southern Living house plans call to mind the stately Greek Revival Plantation homes from the Antebellum "Gone with the Wind" era. Walls and floors at ground level are made of stuccoed brick, while those on upper floors are wood. Because they were built to withstand occasional flooding, Southern house plans usually have no basement, but instead a ground floor "raised basement" for pantries, wine cellars and sometimes a dining room. Found as far north as Virginia, down through Georgia and Florida and out across Mississippi Tennessee and Alabama, Southern home designs are timeless expressions of a more gracious era

Humbler variations include the charming Creole cottage with its one story design, and low sloping roof that spreads out over the front porch.
