Plan Description

Large trees create the woodland look of this plan, which provides exactly the right environment for the native shrubs and the delicate wildflowers and ferns that need a bit of shade to flourish. If you're lucky enough to have several large trees on site and perhaps are despairing over what to grow in their shade, this plan is your answer. If you have a sunny yard but yearn for shade, plant the largest slow-growing trees you can afford, balanced by a few fast-growing kinds. Plan on removing the faster, shorter-lived trees in a few years when the more desirable trees gain some stature. Ideal slow-growing trees to consider include native oaks and sugar maples. Fast growers that can be used to create shade and scale in a hurry include alder, poplars and willows. Wood-chip pathways throughout the mulched wildflower border make movement through the garden easy and inviting, creating vignettes at their corners and curves. The pond and the bridge that spans it anchor the design and lend the garden its unique character. Evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs, including many natives, provide year-round structure. At first, the wildflowers will grow in the spaces where you plant them, in exciting drifts of color. Over time, however, they'll grow mingle and reseed, creating a more natural unplanned look. Please be sure to purchase nursery-propagated wildflower plants and seeds; never transplant them from the wild or buy them from sources that gather them in the wild, since doing so further endangers the beauty of our natural heritage.
